It definitely feels like New Year's - and by extension, 2017 - was just yesterday. February might not be the most exciting month of the year - though it does have Valentines Day right there in the middle - and it may be bitter cold out, but that doesn’t mean the fun has stopped in Lexington! Come check out what the second-largest city in Kentucky has to offer to do and see, from dining to events to shows. This month has a ton of fun activities for everyone - these are just a few of our favorites.

1. Shen Yun
Here’s an event you don’t see come through Central Kentucky every day - a large scale theatrical performance of Chinese story-based dance that takes you on an enlightening journey through 5,000 years of history! Shen Yun, a touring performing arts group from New York City, boasts a unique artistic vision that expands the theatrical experience into a multi-dimensional, inspiring journey through ancient Chinese culture and society. With classical Chinese dance, brilliant costumes, artistic backdrops, and an enchanting orchestra, you will be instantly transported to another world and witness ancient legends come to life in an experience like no other. Featuring one of the world’s oldest art forms— classical Chinese dance—along with patented special eﬀects and all-original orchestral works, Shen Yun serves as a lens on a a civilization of beauty and wisdom. This phenomenal cultural experience is coming here to Central Kentucky’s own Eastern Kentucky Center for the Arts as a part of a two-night special performance! This is definitely something you don’t want to miss; traditional western ballets such as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake are always touring, but a traditional Chinese dance tour of this magnitude is significantly more rare. This is the perfect chance to get out the house during these cold February days and take in some culture!

2. UK Basketball vs University of Tennessee
Any Lexington local knows the hype of a UK Athletics event, so add that to the fanfare of the UK-Tennessee rivalry and this is sure to be one of the best games of the season! The Vols have won n the last three games played on their home court, so this is the Wildcats' chance to get them back now that they're home at Rupp. Kentucky’s got a pretty solid-looking team this year, and they should easily make it into the March Madness tournament if they keep it up. But Tennessee is also a very solid team - ranked #22 by the AP Top 25 at the time of writing - meaning this will be a very competitive game, and the Wildcats are not guaranteed a win here. These games are most exhilarating events that this city has to offer - the city's equivalent of a huge pep rally - uniting Lexingtonians of all ages in support of the Kentucky team.

3. Celebrate Valentine’s day at a Downtown Lex restaurant
What’s February most known for? Why Valentine’s Day, of course. And what’s the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? With some food! Eating out is one of the most enjoyable parts of being in downtown Lexington, and Valentine’s Day just makes things even better! What’s more romantic than the Russian Revolution? Okay, maybe romantic’s not the word - but you have to admit, it was a dramatic historical moment, worth of the symphony Shostakovich wrote about it. LexPhil will be opening the second half of the 2017/18 Season with the ground-breaking Symphony No. 7 in REVOLUTION! Dedicated to the city of Leningrad, this work has remained a symbol of resistance against totalitarianism and militarism both in the Soviet Union and the West.
