University of Kentucky MLK Day 2020 Events
MLK Day may not be the first thing you think of when you think of January (maybe chilly temperatures, the end of the holiday season, or the first snowfall), but it’s nonetheless a very important holiday that occurs this month.
While January might not be the best time for swimming or walking around gardens, there are plenty of things to do on a chilly day in this town, especially when that chilly day falls on a holiday like Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As day of great significance for the American public, Lexington, of course, has plenty of programming to recognize and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Here’s a few events in the upcoming days that you can participate in to celebrate and honor this icon of nonviolence and strength.
The University of Kentucky and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government invites you to join them on January 20, 2020 at Heritage Hall in the Lexington Convention Center for this free event celebrating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event kicks off with a joyous public Freedom March at 10:00 a.m. Afterwards, drop by the Commemorative Holiday Program in Heritage Hall at 11:00 a.m, where Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, the Senior Pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, spiritual home of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be delivering a keynote message. Following Rev. Dr. Warnock’s address, singer/composer DONNIE will perform. He was nurtured artistically in the same musical tradition that gave rise to such singers as India Arie, Anthony David, D’Angelo and other artists often characterized as “Neo-Soul”. Later that day at 2:30pm, the Kentucky Theatre will have a free showing of the Academy Award-winning film, Green Book, about a world-class Black pianist in the 1960s.
