One of the luxuries of homeownership is having a bit more space\nthan you need so you can expand to fill it. One of the others is having a home\nlarge enough to entertain without having to leave home. Sometimes that means\nhaving people over for dinner or brunch; other times it means having\nout-of-town friends and family stay over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guest bedrooms<\/a>, like\ncottage furnishings, often suffer from \u201cnot good enough to get rid of, not good\nenough to use every day\u201d syndrome. If your guest bedroom looks like the\nnot-quite-final resting place for the mismatched and ready-to-be-retired, here\nare a few bedroom interior design ideas for a makeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create a bunk room in your attic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since you\u2019re probably going to be in your house for a while and\nyour own and your friends\u2019 families may be expanding, rather than designate a\nground or second floor bedroom as a guest room, why not create a bunk room in\nyour attic? That way you don\u2019t need to worry about whether your guests can\nshare a double or need a queen or king-sized bed. Buy as many twin beds as the\nroom will easily fit or repurpose your children\u2019s twin beds as they graduate to\ndoubles and queens and an entire family (or two of your old college friends)\ncan easily share a guest room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This works particularly well with the sloping ceiling aesthetic of\nmost attics. Choose similar (they don\u2019t need to be matching) wrought iron bed\nframes at a flea market and paint them white (or black). Install wall-mounted\nlighting above each bed and the tiniest of bedside tables in between. Pick a\ncolor theme (blue and white, for instance) and use a different blue and white\nquilt on each bed. A bench or trunk at the end of each bed will give guests a\nplace to store their suitcases. If the attic doesn\u2019t have a closet, make sure\nyou\u2019ve got some hooks for guests to hang their clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your attic room does indeed have sloping ceilings, consider\npainting the ceiling and the walls the same color. That doesn\u2019t mean white:\neven small rooms look bigger if there\u2019s no contrast between ceiling and walls.\nIf you choose a strong or dark color though, stick to neutrals or whites for\nyour bed linens and pick up the wall color with throw cushions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than any other bedroom in your home, your guest bedroom is\ngoing to be used primarily for sleeping. Keep things bare but functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accentuate the room\u2019s function<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the only room you can spare for a guest bedroom is tiny, rather\nthan try to cram too much into a small space or make it look bigger, adopt a\nJapanese sleeping pod\/old time railway berth approach to decorating and center\na four-poster bed (with or without curtains, but keep them sheer if the room is\nvery small) in the room on the shortest wall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An over-the door hook, small triangular corner shelves on both\nsides of the bed, and either a wall-mounted lamp at the head of the bed or two small\nones on each shelf and you\u2019re done. If you\u2019ve got room for a storage ottoman at\nthe end of the bed, you\u2019ll have seating for your guests and a place to store\nthe linens for the guest bedroom (including extra blankets, pillows, and\nthrows).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give your guests a powder room<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you can make the plumbing work, consider repurposing your spare\nroom\u2019s existing closet to create a tiny powder room in the guest room. Just a\ntoilet and a sink will make all the difference in giving your guests a sense of\nprivacy and make their stay less disruptive for the rest of the family. They\u2019ll\nstill have to share one of the main bathrooms for baths and showers during\ntheir stay, but at least they\u2019ll be able to brush their teeth and splash some\nwater on their faces before they join you for breakfast in their robes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repurpose a closet and add sliding barn doors with a stop as your\nguest powder room. Add some shelving above the sink and you\u2019ll be able to store\nguest room towels and linens there. Bonus: seeing all the towels there will\nmake them feel they\u2019re staying in a luxury hotel suite<\/a>. And if\nthe room is big enough, consider adding a single-serve coffee machine so your\nguests are caffeinated by the time you see them.
