I've lived in Dawsonville for almost 20 years. It isn't my hometown, but it's a town I am proud to call my home and the people have always made me feel welcome here. I have watched our little town grow but you can go from a large business area to the small home town feel in only a few little miles. Dawsonville is a historic town with the fall Moonshine festival setting off the theme of our community. The festival has grown over the years and it is spread out from the historic courthouse at the square to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame where you will learn about the history of moonshine and racing . There is an actual moonshine distillery inside with tours and sampling available. Also plenty of old and new cars to gaze at during the car shows that are held during the festival. Fall is the best time of year here in the north Georgia mountains with the large assortment of fall color changing on all the trees. It brings thousands north to capture the beauty of the season. Also in the fall you will find plenty of pumpkin farms and corn mazes throughout the county that are great family fun for all ages. On Thanksgiving evening, 400 northbound becomes quite a sight with miles of car lights streaming up the highway. Thousands of Black Friday shoppers come here to walk off Thanksgiving dinner for hours, and hours, and hours of Christmas shopping at The North Georgia Premium Outlet Mall area. This year, 2017, there will be several retail chains, restaurants as well as Home Depot and Walmart within walking distance of the mall that will make shopping for the holiday season easier by being able to get all the shopping done for everyone all in one area. Publix has joined Kroger and Ingles as our large grocery chains in the 400/53 area. A few miles into town is Food Lion that services the west part of our community. For recreational fun there is so much to do that I can't mention it all. On the east is Lake Lanier where you can swim, fish, boat or just enjoy the beaches and water. On the other end of town a few miles on 53 west past the square and the new court house you can fork off at Elliot parkway and hwy 53 to reach two different destinations. Staying on 53, it will lead you to the Atlanta Motorsports Park for Kart racing enthusiasts. With a 2 mile track for racing along with a go-kart track this place is the "must see" of any racing fan. If you had forked off to the right on Elliot parkway (hwy183) this will lead you out toward a deer park and Amicalola Falls State Park that is home to the highest waterfall in Georgia with a 729 foot waterfall, making it one of the 7 natural wonders in Georgia. The Appalachian Trail begins in the park. It has hiking trails, lodging and restaurants for everyone to enjoy. Many restaurants, new and old, are here and after a day of fun and dinner, catch a movie at the Regal Cinema just north of hwy 400 and 53. Our schools rate above average with an 8 out of 10 in the GreatSchools City Rating and I am sure that number will only get better because we are raising some of the smartest students in Georgia.
