Here's what I love about Waconia: it's got everything you need (including grocery stores, a wonderful vet, and convenient medical care) and everything you want (think coffee shops, a walkable downtown with great dining, and a movie theater), while offering bonus amenities that you can only get when you're surrounded by beautiful open spaces: top-notch golf courses, land for horseback riding, and more wineries than you can shake a stick at. It's a great town and I'm so glad it's where my mom has moved for retirement -- I love visiting this great town every chance I get! less

The city of Waconia is named after the 3,100-acre lake by the same name and upon whose shores the city sits, but make no mistake, Waconia is its own entity. While the lake, which is the second largest in the Twin Cities, is an important and even vital part of the city, there are a variety of reasons it's been named by the financial website NerdWallet as the top city in Minnesota for young families. It's at once close to the Twin Cities metro area but maintains a rural feel, has experienced tremendous growth but maintains a strong sense of community. It has a vibrant downtown area with abundant retail options, and a city hall that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At one time, the Coney Island area of Lake Waconia featured boathouses, cottages and a hotel, and was a prominent tourism draw. Today, there are three wineries in the area, and dining options abound on the shores of Lake Waconia, giving the city a distinct lake-life feel. less

Waconia, located about 35 miles southwest of Minneapolis, has been booming with new development and growth over the past many years as people flock to it's small town feel with great amenities and close proximity to the metro. Currently, there are 2 national builders with active neighborhoods in Waconia, so I stopped by both to take a look. First, I stopped by the Ryland Homes (CalAtlantic) neighborhood called Interlaken Woods. This community features single family homes with 9 floor plans available to choose from. The homes start in the low $300,000's offering an affordable price point for new construction. I checked out the model and it shows very nicely with an elegant kitchen and fully finished basement. Just down the road from Interlaken Woods, you can find the new Mattamy Homes community called Crosswinds. This community is its first of two phases and features single family homes with 10 available floor plans. Base prices for the floor plans start at $295,000. less
